We are excited to announce our new Upstart Internship program! CED places University of Alaska students with some of the state’s most exciting startups and research programs. Students with a startup focus will learn about entrepreneurship and what it means to be a founder, while the startup founders get to work with the University’s best and brightest as they grow their companies.
We believe in regularly celebrating our accomplishments and milestones. Not just because we want an excuse to eat delicious macarons from Sweet Caribou or taste various mini cakes from Fire Island (although we definitely enjoy these activities!), but because celebrating small wins boosts our quality of life.
Team CED recently watched INBOUND Bold Talks: Kim Scott "Radical Candor" and we thought it was worth sharing with all of you! If you have an extra 15 minutes, watch it for yourself. If you don’t, here’s a summary
Samantha Davenport joined Team CED as our Startups Storyteller! In this role, she will tell the stories of Alaska’s entrepreneurs and the larger ecosystem supporting them. Samantha is the lead contributor to the Alaska Startups website and will manage the associated social media channels. The opportunity to have someone with her talent showcasing entrepreneurs in Alaska incredibly valuable, and is a service we’re proud to offer our state.
“I found this book to be eye-opening in many respects. As the title suggests, Schramm’s book is partially about busting myths and conventional wisdom about entrepreneurship. It turns out that techie, establishment-bucking millennials actually start very few businesses compared to 40-year-olds with corporate experience.” - Nolan
CED’s book club kicked off with The Mom Test by Rob Fitzpatrick, which is about “how to talk to customers and learn if your business is a good idea when everyone is lying to you.” It’s a quick and easy read, and each of us came away with new perspectives on customer discovery, which is the process of identifying customers and understanding their purchasing behavior and motivations.
